Betsy Gardner to Announce Candidacy for 5th District Council Seat Sunday, February 21, 2016
Baltimore, Maryland – Elizabeth “Betsy” Gardner – one of Baltimore’s most beloved public servants – has served her community tirelessly over the past fourteen years and three City Hall administrations, as a community relations liaison for Baltimore 5th District.
Ms. Gardner has officially filed to campaign for the council seat vacated by City Councilwoman Rochelle “Rikki” Spector, and will formally announce her candidacy at Pimlico Racetrack’s Sports Palace on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.
Ms. Gardner has been active in politics dating back to her youth, when as a grade school student she would tag along with family members to volunteer for political campaigns in her hometown of Charleston West Virginia. Every summer in Charleston, Betsy would accompany her father to “Boys State” – an event sponsored by the American Legion that taught State Government to high school juniors and was regularly attended by State and local officials.
Ms. Gardner is a graduate of Charleston High School, and continued on to Marshall University, also in West Virginia, where she majored in social work. During her first-ever visit to the City of Baltimore in 1991, Betsy was charmed by the city and its people, and decided to relocate to Baltimore to pursue career paths, which led to professional positions at H&S Bakery, Alex Brown and Sons, and The Associated Jewish Federation.
During a distinguished fourteen year tenure as a community relations liaison for the City of Baltimore, Betsy learned how the city operates, gained valuable knowledge about community needs and issues, developed an eclectic capability to solve problems, build bridges and access information to provide support and leadership for the residents of Baltimore’s 5th District and beyond. With the initial announcement of her intention to run for City Council, public support for Ms. Gardner was robust. Now that she has officially declared her candidacy, as testament to the high regard for which she’s held in the 5th District, that support is gaining dynamic momentum. Ms. Gardner has a strong, demonstrated commitment to improving public safety, supporting education initiatives, and improving the quality of life of Baltimore City residents at-large.
